Karl Ludwig Sand (Charles Louis Sand) appears here in the dress of a German student, wearing a suit with a lace collar and a cap. He grasps a dagger, pointing to his assassination of the conservative dramatist August von Kotzebue in 1819 in Mannheim. Sand was a member of a liberal Burschenschaft (student association) that supported the unification of Germany. After his execution in 1820, he was seen by many as a martyr to this cause.
