This satire concerns the 1827 marriage of the young 9th Duke of St. Albans to the wealthy Harriot Beaufort Coutts (widow of the banker Thomas Coutts). Their alliance, made when she was fifty and he twenty-six, brought Harriet a title and her husband needed financial resources.
