US States and Territories by Arbuckle's Ariosa Coffee, part 2
"U.S. States and Territories" constitutes a set of one hundred cards issued by the New York-based Arbuckle Coffee in around 1898 to advertise one of their coffee brands. Each richly illustrated card is dedicated to the history, industry, and geography of a U.S. state, featuring a map and related vignettes on the front and information advertising the company on the back. In the 1880s, trade cards published by companies specializing in tobacco, candy, coffee, and other products began to issue illustrated, collectable cards to encourage brand loyalty. The cards—this set being an example—were often educational and constituted one of the ways in which visual knowledge was disseminated in the period.
