Young Man and Woman, from the series Gem Spa

Aaron Rose American

Not on view

Like camera-shy celebrities on a public stroll, this couple cannily deflects the photographer’s gaze. As he was documenting the young denizens of St. Mark’s Place in the late sixties, Rose became a sort of counterculture paparazzo, capturing the threadbare glamour of New York’s hippie scene. He worked in and around Gem Spa—the soda shop and newsstand which, until its recent closure, remained an iconic downtown haunt. Realized in hazy, newsprint grays, his photographs evoke anticipatory nostalgia for an era approaching its end.
