A collection of lace classification, 1937

The 1937 version of Johnstone's lace classification comprises typescript and manuscript text; ca. 260 photoprints supplied by the Museum; illustrations from various published sources; and a few mounted samples of lacework. The classification system was prepared by Johnstone for cataloging the lace collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. There is a general introduction in which the four broad categories encompassing the twenty sections of the classification are defined. Each class section contains catalog entries for individual works of lace that are given historical context by narrative passages. Where an illustration is lacking for a particular entry, space has been outlined for its subsequent inclusion. The typescript has been extensively annotated, and portions of the text are in manuscript. Each of the sections originally was held together by a paper fastener or ribbon, and each group was covered, front and back, by decorative, block printed paper over heavier paper stock
