A Mill with a Fortified Bridge, a Rowing Boat in the Foreground
Roelandt Savery Flemish
This delicate drawing of a round tower, its roof overgrown with plants, connected to two buildings and a covered bridge, is most likely a creation of the artist’s imagination inspired by the many sketches he made in and around the city of Prague. Savery worked there for Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II over a period of ten years. During that time, he created a large body of drawings of the city and its surroundings, focusing in particular on buildings and other structures.
