Village Square, Cagnes
Jean-François Raffaëlli French
Not on view
Raffaëlli visited Cagnes, a coastal town on the French Riviera, in 1913. In this view, one of two he made during his trip, he focused on the modest village square with only a glimpse of the sea and mountains in the background at left. He rendered the sky in this work using plate tone, though its evenness gives it the appearance of aquatint. In this late phase of his printmaking career, the artist masterfully combined multiple printmaking techniques.
