In her ongoing project, Seat Assignment, Katchadourian makes photographs on airplanes with her iPhone, working spontaneously and using only the materials at hand: books and magazines, in-flight snacks, clothing, and fellow passengers. Using her tray table as a studio workspace, she creates playful constructions that inventively exploit photography's inherent illusionism: the glare on a magazine page becomes a spectral apparition; crumbled pretzels are transformed into trompe-l'oeil landslides; a pair of wafer cookies evoke the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center. At its heart, the project is an investigation of the relationship between freedom and constraint, an inquiry into limitation as a catalyst for creativity.
