Constellation. Proposal for a Ceiling Installation in the Atrium of the Kunkel Gallery in the Whitaker Center, Harrisburg, PA
This drawing contains a proposal for an installation to be mounted in the atrium of the Kunkel Gallery, situated within the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. An initial idea for the center, which was to contain a fine arts museum, a new home for the Museum of Scientific Discovery, and a 400-600-seat theater with workshop, rehearsal, and studio space was developed in the late 1980s, and the building was eventually opened in 1999. The building was designed by architect Hugh Hardy of the New York-based firm Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates which specialized in public event spaces.
This design was made on speculation by the New York-based artist and art teacher Jack Stewart. Entitled "Constellation", it proposes an installation with colorful glass discs suspended from a reflective ceiling. The drawing is made in frog's eye perspective to maximize the view of the ceiling. Only one wall of the gallery is shown, which is characterized by three open doorways with windows above. The surface of the wall has been divided into rectangular blocks decorated with circles embedded in smaller green tiles. The design does not appear to have been executed in the center.
