Candlestick

Manufactory Meissen Manufactory German

Not on view

This candlestick demonstrates the pervasive influence of French Rococo taste on Meissen during the directorship of Johann Joachim Kändler. The manufactory used French print sources for inspiration. Probably based on a silver form, the swirling scrollwork found on this candlestick is reminiscent of the ornamental prints issued by Jacques de Lajoüe, Jean-François Cuvilliés, and Just-Aurèle Meissonnier, beginning in the 1730s.
