Jumpsuit
This black taffeta evening jumpsuit was shown as part of Mariuccia Mandelli’s autumn/winter 1981–82 "Wavy Line" collection for the label Krizia. While other objects from this season borrowed inspiration from Peking opera costumes, Tibetan armor, and the overcoat of the Mongol emperor Genghis Khan, the arcing silhouette of this ensemble draws directly from the curvilinear geometric forms of a pleated hand fan. The pronounced shoulders of the design equally reflect broader trends in fashions of the period as well as the designers’ own particular interest in this segment of the body as an area for experimentation and exaggeration.
