Platter with crocodile, snake, and lizard

School of Paris French

Not on view

Inspired by the works made by the Renaissance ceramicist Bernard Palissy (1510-ca.1590), nineteenth-century producers of Palissy ware combined novel motifs with traditional techniques. A crocodile, which were not a typical feature of the sixteenth-century potter’s work, occupies the center of this platter teeming with life.
