The Destruction of Sodom

Camille Corot French

Not on view

According to Alfred Robaut, author of the Corot catalogue raisonné and former owner of this drawing, the artist executed it as a souvenir or ricordo of his submission to the Salon of 1857 (29.100.18), while visiting his friend Constant Dutilleux in Arras. Although the long, horizontal format of the sheet and general features of the landscape conform to the painting he cut down and exhibited in 1857, the scale of the figures relative to their setting is closer to his original composition, as recorded in an oil sketch in the collection (1984.75). The bold, gestural quality of the drawing suggests rapid execution and heightens the sense of movement conveyed by the figures fleeing at left and the overall turbulence of the scene.
