Front, nos. 1–2, August 19, 1942
Designed by Hara Hiromu and published in Japan from 1942 until 1945, Front was a government-sponsored propaganda magazine inspired directly by the Soviet magazine USSR in Construction (1930–41). It was distributed freely by Japan to the eight nation members of its "Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere." The combined mastery of its montage-based graphic illustrations and rich gravure printing produced a tour-de-force of pictorial design. This issue is subtitled Guarding Asia, the Imperial Navy.
