Meyer Vaisman American, born Venezuela

Not on view

Contesting established notions of originality in art, Venezuelan-born artist Meyer Vaisman sought to create pictures that obscure the trace of his hand. He was a prominent member of the Neo-Geo group in New York during the 1980s, an art movement that considered critically the developments of technology and its potential to improve people’s lives. In his works, Vaisman employed mechanical techniques and commercial processed inks to replace actual painting with simulated and reproduced imagery. Consisting of a large panel with protruding circular elements, Jugs also plays with the conventions of painting as a two-dimensional surface. Prints depicting jugs and vases from art history reflect on the reproduction and circulation of the artistic image from ancient times to today.
