Statue of Liberty

2018
Not on view
This print relates to one of Armajani’s last projects before his death: a ten-foot oil painting of the Statue of Liberty commissioned by the artist’s friend, curator Christian Bernard, for the Toulouse Contemporary Art Biennial. Borrowing the language of a legal document, the text declares the artist’s intention to return the Statue of Liberty (symbolized in this context by the artist’s painting) to France until liberty has returned to the United States, a condition predicated on Donald Trump’s evacuation of the Office of the President. The work speaks explicitly to Armajani’s life-long political commitments and engagement with the issue of immigration.
