Poster advertising a free night course to learn printmaking and bookbinding

The poster was commissioned by the short-lived Department of Press and Propaganda (DAPP), an independent office within the Ministry of Education when it was setting up schools and arranging free night classes for workers. It advertises a free course in printmaking and bookbinding. The overall design and the image of a man working on a binding are probably the work of Díaz de León, who, in 1929, established and directed the School of Book Arts within the Central School of Fine Arts. The poster reflects aspects of Russian poster design that became known through a 1936 exhibition at the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City.



El cartel fue encargado por el fugaz Departamento Autónomo de Prensa y Propaganda (DAPP) —una oficina independiente integrada en la Secretaría de Educación Pública—, que en aquel momento estaba creando escuelas y organizando clases nocturnas gratuitas para los trabajadores. Anuncia un curso gratuito de artes gráficas y encuadernación. El diseño general y la imagen del hombre que trabaja en una encuadernación fueron creados, probablemente, por Díaz de León, que en 1929 estableció y dirigió el Taller de Artes del Libro en la Escuela Central de Artes Plásticas. Este póster refleja algunos aspectos del diseño de los carteles rusos, popularizado por una exposición que se celebró en el Palacio de Bellas Artes de Ciudad de México en 1936.
