This is Beerbohm’s first book, an anthology of writings for various English periodicals written while he was a student at Oxford. The cover is brown cloth stamped with a symmetrical pattern of hand mirrors and butterflies interlaced with billowing ribbons.
In 1895, Armstrong developed a typography which appears on her covers through 1910. With the new forms, the letters A, E, F, and H have high cross bars, and the E and F have very short ones. In this year, she also begins to sign her covers with a distinctive monogram of the M and A combined. In 1896, Armstrong designed more book covers than any other year, totaling thirty designs. 1896 also marks an evolution in her design: a move toward a compartmentalized ornamental design with vertical emphasis, which would remain throughout her career.
