In the bishop's carriage
"Signed Margaret Armstrong binding design in white and dark green on red buckram of a basket of roses tied with ribbon on either side surmounted by the titles in dark green with a background formed by a "T" shaped white panel with rules of various thicknesses repeated down the stem of the "T". The spine has the titles in dark green and a motif of crossed trumpets decorated with ribbon surmounted by a smiling mask with a double white rule at the head and tail. In original paper dust jacket with the titles in brown on the front and spine panels with Grosset and Dunlap advertising in brown on the rear panel. Originally published by Bobbs-Merrill, the only change to the binding for this later Grosset & Dunlap printing was the substitution of Grosset and Dunlap for Bobbs-Merrill on the spine and the substitution of plain red cloth instead of fine, diagonally ribbed cloth. This is the author's first book which was made into a silent film in 1913 starring Mary Pickford. The story of Nance Olden, an orphan raised in an orphanage, who becomes the companion of a burglar and helps him in his work. She is eventually redeemed by the unspoken influence of a Bishop who she initially fools and later saves from scandal. A charming Armstrong binding design whose “T" shaped white background panel was a reuse of the background motif Armstrong used on her 1899 masterpiece, Whittier's Tent on the Beach.
