The art collection seen here was assembled by the Irish-born Alexander Turney Stewart, one of New York's wealthiest merchants, known for establishing the luxury department store A. T. Stewart & Co. Between 1869-70, he built a mansion on Fifth Avenue at 34th Street and filled it with paintings and sculptures often acquired in Europe directly from the artists. This image was made to illustrate a two volume set that includes a detailed description of the collection which had, by that date, passed to Stewart's widow Cornelia.
