CONSCIOUSNESS 1. Concern for some social or political cause:
Tremaine Emory of Denim Tears began his collaboration with Levi’s in 2019—four hundred years after the first enslaved Africans arrived in Point Comfort, Virginia. The legacy of the cotton industry in America, as well as Emory’s own family’s history as enslaved laborers, cotton pickers, and cotton-field owners, informed his concept for the partnership. The circular cotton wreaths, applied in print and appliqué on vintage denim, symbolize the intertwined past and future experiences of Black Americans.
