Pocket Hanger
Not on view
Decorative, yet functional, this household device is a column of seven pockets, designed to hold letters, other papers and small, shallow objects. The creator was almost certainly a female amateur, probably making this for her own or for friends’ use. She was, apparently, motivated to commemorate the French Revolutionary Wars. Ships flying the Union Jack sail beneath what may be the white cliffs of Dover; two panels below, a cavalry officer- perhaps, in his blue uniform and helmet, a Royal Horse Guard- charges on a rearing horse beside a canon, with the Union flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and a yellow ensign Union Jack fluttering to either side.
