Marble bowl
Technical analysis: Ultraviolet-induced visible luminescence examination, optical microscopy
This bowl, carved from white marble, has a loss to the rim that was filled and painted white. There is a light greyish cast over the interior surface and black marks along the rim edge. Numerous scratches and abrasions are visible on the rim and elsewhere, and light brown accretions cover almost half of the exterior.
The vessel’s walls rise from a flat base and gently curve out to form a shallow bowl with a thickened, rolled rim that would have prevented liquids from spilling.
