The White Shield is a collection of short sketches by Myrtle Reed. The bindings Armstrong designed for Reed's books are fairly similar in style and aesthetic, though her later designs show the influence of the then-new Art Nouveau style, complete with stylized plants and asymmetrical designs, such as here. The Madonna lily in the design alludes both to the main character and her Madonna lily from Reed's story "The Madonna of The Tambourine," as well as to Constance Grey in "The White Shield," while the cross-like panel alludes to the shield mentioned in "The Madonna of The Tambourine" as well as to the painting mentioned in the "The White Shield."
