Grotesque Panel with a Winged Figure supporting a Pergola

Cornelis Bos Netherlandish

Not on view

Panel with a Candelabra Grotesque, roughly divided in two parts. The upper half shows a Pergola with a Bacchic Fountain. It is supported by a winged hybrid figure depicted below, whose lower body morphs into two vegetal scrolls from which satyrs sprout. The print is part of a series of Italianate grotesques executed by Cornelis Bos after his departure from Antwerp in 1544. There are close similarities between motifs in these prints and some of the etchings made at Fontainebleau, which suggest that he may have made them during or closely following his stay in France between 1544 and 1546.
