Lamp

early 6th century BCE
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 152
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
The interior basin of this unusual lamp was subdivided into three equal sections, providing each nozzle with its own oil supply. The lamp is one of several marble examples, some with nozzles in the form of a female head, discovered in the Sanctuary of Demeter Malophoros at Selinus. Carved from marble quarried on the Greek islands, they were probably produced in Greece and exported across the Mediterranean.
