Art out-of-doors : hints on good taste in gardening
Not on view
This emblematic design for a gardening manual features two tree roses crossed and intertwined with a banner that reads: Ce qua nos jardins sont les fleurs—les arts le sont a la vie (what flowers are to our gardens, the arts are to life), the motto of French printmaker Jean-Claude-Richard de Saint Non (1727-1791). The overlapping compass, shears, and crossing branches within the circle at center create the effect of a trellis. The circle refers to the common base form of flower garden design.
