This striking design for Cable’s adventurous tale of the Civil War fought by descendants of Louisiana and Mississippi is at once characteristic of Armstrong’s style in its use of a balanced, rectilinear central plane but unusual in the overall restraint where the decoration is confined to the title plane. Illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy.
