Rustic Arbor, from the series Views in Central Park, New York, Part I

Publisher Louis Prang & Co. American

Not on view

In 1864, the Boston lithographers Louis Prang & Co. published three sets of small colored cards devoted to "Views in Central Park." Much of the park below 79th Street had opened to the public by this date and these images isolate features that visitors on foot could visit. This card comes from the first set which is still housed in its original envelope and represents an open sided wooden structure atop a hill accessed by a winding path, with a man and woman standing inside.
