David Vinckboons, the very popular draftsman and painter, made only three prints himself, but his designs were the basis for more prints than any other Netherlandish artist in the early seventeen century. In this series, various scenes of hunting and fishing are set in stylized landscapes, peopled by peasants and noblemen.
Here gentlemen on horseback are using hounds to chase down the foxes. Others on the ground, joined by peasants, chase the foxes down with staffs and spears. The wooded landscape is filled with brutal activity.
Seven of the ten etchings, including the present work, are by Pieter Serwouters and the remaining three by Claes Jansz. Visscher.
