This triptych based on a popular warrior tale depicts a dramatic naval confrontation off the coast of Kyushu. Fought in the summer of 1333, amid widespread civil strife, the Battle of Tsukushi contributed to the collapse of the warrior government that had led Japan since the end of the twelfth century.
