Holocaust project exhibition packet

This rare exhibition proposal packet was produced in conjunction with Judy Chicago’s travelling exhibition, Holocaust Project: From Darkness into Light (1985–93), which Chicago hoped would "stimulate dialogue that will contribute to a transformation of consciousness that may help prevent the recurrence of another Holocaust." The packet includes a fact sheet; exhibit tour information; a description and concept by Isaiah Kuperstein; a checklist of works; scale drawings of works; and forty eight slides. Chicago conceived of the exhibition as a collaborative project with several people: her husband, photographer Donald Woodman; a weaver; stained-glass artisans; and numerous scholars and consultants. The exhibition, in twelve parts, was structured as a journey through the darkness of the Holocaust into the light of hope. Her artistic goal was to blend photography and painting into mural-size artworks that combine historic reality (suggested by Woodman's photographs) and interpretation (seen in Chicago's paintings).
