Design for a Triumphal Arch with Imagery celebrating Architecture
Anonymous, Central European, 18th century Central European
Not on view
Large drawing containing a triumphal arch in a late Baroque style. Within the central compartment under the arch is a depiction of an oversized architectural design held up by putti and a male figure with a compass in his hand. The structure is crowned by a smaller niche with a female personification of Architecture. Upon arrival at The Museum, the drawing was described as a design for a title page for an architecture treatise, but no related printed title page has surfaced thus far. Alternatively, it could have been designed as a thesis print, or some form of ephemeral decoration.
