Lineas
Gego (Gertrud Goldschmidt) worked in a variety of mediums—sculpture, printmaking, drawing—yet her oeuvre shows a remarkable rigor and consistency of concerns. In each technique, she engaged the function, aesthetic, and creation of lines, focusing on the relationships between linear forms and visual perception. In Lines, she explored various textures, thicknesses, shapes, effects, and marks that can be made with lines. The book is composed of twelve lithographs, printed in either red or gray ink. Each folio has a distinct pattern of irregularly drawn lines that are interrupted by various marks, even the words of a poem written by Amy Baker Sandback, then a printer at Tamarind. Contrasts between rigid lines and irregular scrawls connect this work with the aesthetic, the sense of movement, and the concerns about spatial engagement found in Gego’s wire sculptures.
