Archaistic vessel with tubular handles

13th–14th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 216
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
This vase features fanciful interpretations of archaic motifs. The register around its neck depicts rearing deerlike creatures. The broadest register is given over to a geometric abstraction that bears no resemblance to ancient animal masks or other motifs. The maker obviously intended to animate the surface by artfully combining unusual patterns to create a vessel of compelling visual energy.
