Peasant family

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 690

The depiction emphasizes the poverty experienced by a Mexican family. Standing beneath a makeshift canopy, the mother and father protectively rest their hands on their young son. On the ground before them lie ribbons that are presumably for sale. The scene probably represents a street market that the artist has treated in an abstract way to heighten the family’s perilous situation.
