Print with Two Grotesque Figures, a Cat and Two Birds
This print is part of a series of at least 29 prints containing monstrous figures after designs by the Dutch artist Arendt van Bolten. They were almost certainly published in Paris, however, by Pierre I Firens who may also have been the engraver for the series. This copy of the print appears to be from a later edition of the print based on the changes that were made to the plate. Initially the print showed only the two grotesque figures, which derive from drawings by Van Bolten in an album now kept at the British Museum in London. In particular, they relate to drawing no.153. Later, though still in the 17th century, someone added the figure of a cat sitting on one of the two creatures, and two birds on either side of the composition.
