Spruce gum box with elk motif in book form
Case carved of solid wood, with separately made top and bottom covers, all finished in red paint. Only the top cover serves as a sliding lid, as it is executed with a recessed finger hold. The box is decorated with a low-relief silhouette of an elk, and chip-carved patterns.-- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Lynn Heckman
