Traveling inkwell in book form

between 1800 and 1899
Not on view
Miniature inkwells for traveling occasionally took the form of books, some with specific titles such as Baedeker travel guide. This luxurious variant has gilded metal edges and is covered in shagreen edged with engraved silver borders and two transverse bands on the spine made of the same materials as on the edges. The interior of the box is separated into three compartments with four circular holes with places for two glass jars with gold lids (one glass jar is missing). -- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Lynn Heckman
