A good luck box with drawer in book form
This box is made from assembled basswood in the form of a rounded-back binding. The spine pulls out and is part of a drawer. The book is painted with a red background with on top a "stamped" pattern in black, possibly to resemble tortoiseshell. The spine shows an added central black band, while the front cover carries an applied gold-and-black painted, inverted horseshoe design in the center, with black sections above and below. Additionally, both covers and the spine are decorated with curvilinear patterns in gold paint. All edges are painted gold. Pencil markings inside the box edges and spine note the number 21, indicating that multiples of this box may have been made.Note: The objects conservator noticed some faint writing on the underside of the bottom. Under UV he though it read "Mar 30 1953."-- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Marijn Manuels
