Bible box in book form

between 1815 and 1825
Not on view
This box is carved out of one piece of wood with a separate fixed panel for the bottom and a slide opening at the top, including finger hold. The container walls are relatively thin (1/4") and finely incised with parallel lines forming geometrical patterns covering the surfaces of both covers and the spine. The design on the back cover especially resembles a fan-style bookbinding. The edges of the book are painted gold. Finely carved inner edges at both ends of the spine resemble embroidered end bands.-- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Marijn Manuels
