Box in book form, carved with roses
The front cover is carved in high relief with two entwined stems of roses and camellia. Diagonal lines at the two corners suggest traditional leather book corners. Two hinges attach the front cover to the box. The back was nailed to the case walls and was left undecorated. The rounded spine is carved to suggest two pairs of raised bands. The box's foredge is concave to resemble a book, its edges are painted gold, and the box is lined with red flock paper.-- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Marijn Manuels
