Young woman reading in profile
Immersed in darkness, a young woman sits in profile reading. A soft light from behind her left shoulder subtly illuminates the side of her head and her hands holding the book on her lap, while her facial features remain in shadow. A tour-de-force example of Lebourg’s tonalist draftsmanship and investigation of black media, this drawing was likely the one that the artist exhibited in 1879 in the Fourth Impressionist exhibition as "La Lecture (le soir)". The young Georges Seurat admired Lebourg’s drawings there and their impact is evident in his own graphic works of a few years later, such as "Embroidery; The Artist’s Mother" (55.21.1).
