Tour management study
For Wood, ordinary, household objects—many gifted from her maternal grandmother—have been essential vehicles for an almost sinister exploration of femininity and the body. Wood’s strange croppings and formal combinations of images and objects—here appearing to join three paintings in one—routinely suggest both a still life and something pulled from the artist’s imagination. Her ability to imply a human presence without the figure itself has been a powerful aspect of her work; images that at first appear mundane morph into something unfamiliar. While initially this work seems predominantly engaged with unexpected, symbolic juxtapositions, it is equally concerned with the possibilities of paint application upon the unusual velvet support.
