Shree Laxmi Narayan

M. Abbayi Indian
ca. 1940
Not on view
In this image, Vishnu and the Goddess Lakshmi, his consort, emerge from the ocean supported by Sesha, the three headed cobra. Both deities are shown four armed, Vishnu holding his discus and conch in his raised hands, gestures protection with another while nonchalantly resting his fourth arm on Lakshmi’s shoulders. Both are adorned with gold jewelry, precious stones and flower garlands. Vishnu wears a yellow dhoti which radiates against his blue body. Lakshmi wears a red sari with gold trim. This adornment has been embellished by a previous owner who applied glitter (glued metal flakes). The white dot on her cheek is the pearl of her nose ring. Woman devotees customarily undertook this enhancing of such images.
