Untitled

2005
Not on view
Untitled is a monumental, photorealistic portrait of the gallerist Paula Cooper, based on a 1984 photograph by Robert Mapplethorpe. When originally exhibited at the Paula Cooper Gallery in 2005, Untitled was installed alone in the pristine white gallery space where it was partially reflected onto the white flooring. A particularly important work within Stingel’s oeuvre, Untitled marked the beginning of a series of large-scale paintings he completed as part of an investigation into the transformation of photography into painting. For Stingel, this portrait of Cooper inherently addresses the inevitable complications of the dealer-artist relationship, flipping the focus from the artist onto Cooper herself—who would unexpectedly be encountering her own likeness for the duration of the exhibition.
