Greiner made this allegorical portrait in honor of his teacher Arthur Haferkorn, whom he also portrayed, in a more straightforward manner, in oil in 1904 and in a lithograph in 1912. The present work depicts Haferkorn trampling Death, portrayed as a skeleton that has dropped its scythe. The protagonist lunges forward holding a baby on his shoulder, reminiscent of the story of Saint Christopher and the Christ Child.
Greiner evidently gave this impression to Max Klinger, another artist of great importance to him. Together they formed part of a vibrant community of German artists living in Rome.
