Untitled

Hannah Wilke American

Not on view

The folded ceramic sculptures that compose this work are examples of the iconic, vulva-shaped forms that Wilke began producing in terracotta in the early 1960s, becoming the first artist to use this imagery as a feminist statement and signature of her practice. Untitled exemplifies Wilke’s interest in an imperfect process of repetition, (re)producing the same form repeatedly, each time with minor variations. The loose, grid-like arrangement of the pieces reflects her merging of the standardized grid and industrial aesthetic of Minimalism with a handmade, organic approach to form.
