Pair of earrings

Greek, South Italian

Not on view

Earrings ornamented with disks and bird pendants are characteristic of Hellenistic jewelry found in South Italy and Sicily. The earrings here are unique in that the elaborate gold eagles are paired with small birds adorned with green and white enamel. The use of inlay and dipped enamel to create multi-colored effects is one of the most important technical innovations that transformed the appearance of Greek jewelry in the Hellenistic period.
