Although Olivier Bro de Comères followed his father into a military career, he received artistic training as a boy from the painter Horace Vernet and grew up surround by the work of Théodore Gericault, who lived in the same building and painted his portrait. Olivier Bro de Comères was stationed in Algiers, just three years after the French invasion. During the eight years he lived there, from 1833 until 1840, he created hundreds of watercolors, making a precious pre-photographic record of Algeria during the first years of French occupation.
